Cemeteries of the Second World War (WW II) The cemetery lies off the road, slightly beyond a ridge, and is indicated by road direction signs approximately 25 meters before the low metal gates and stone wing walls which are situated centrally at the road edge at the head of the access path into the cemetery. The Cross of Sacrifice feature may be seen from the road. The campaign in the Western Desert was fought between the Commonwealth forces (with, later, the addition of two brigades of Free French and one each of Polish and Greek troops) all based in Egypt, and the Axis forces (German and Italian) based in Libya. The battlefield, across which the fighting surged back and forth between 1940 and 1942, was the 1,000 kilometers of desert between Alexandria in Egypt and Benghazi in Libya. Lunch meal will be served at a leading restaurant at Al Alamein city. Al Alamein Military Museum: The museum was opened in the year 1956 during the presidency of Gamal Abdel Nasser as a memorial of the Battle of Al-Alamein between the British and the Germans in 1942 and the battles that took place in South Africa during the Second World War The Al-Alemein Museum is a complete illustration of the story of World War II in North Africa, containing records of all the events. Even before entering the Museum proper, in the garden are huge army tanks and various larger weapons. A visitor can view this heavy equipment from World War II, go inside a tank or an army car, or even jump up and sit atop a tank.
